Too Busy to Make Art? I bet you can do this one thing!

Make just one mark a day. One line in your sketchbook, one stroke of paint on your canvas, one stitch, one drop of watercolor.

There are a million different ways to schedule creative time...and I’m pretty sure I’ve tried most of them over the years!! Before I had kids I was an exhausted high school art teacher in my first years of teaching. I had zero creative energy left by the end of the day.

I decided to commit to making at least one mark every day. I was working on large-ish pieces and I forced myself to walk in the studio every day and add at least one mark in charcoal, or paint one stroke, or glue one bit of collage. Sometimes I would be ready to drop into bed and I’d remember my promise. Ahhhhh! I would stubbornly walk into the studio, make my mark, then go to bed. But many days I would go in to make my mark and get carried away and spend twenty minutes, or an hour...sometimes more!

This is how the work got made. This is what kept my toe in the studio door. One mark may sound too insignificant to bother, but if you really want to keep creating, I promise it’s enough!! It’s just exactly enough to keep you one step ahead of those super heavy art blues. Give it a try, and let me know if it works for you!

Sending Love,
Denise
